An NGS lab runs a dozen library prep chemistries against three or four sequencers, and every assay has its own acceptance criteria, its own review path, and its own report format. A legacy LIMS built around a fixed set of workflows can’t hold that variability, so exceptions get managed in  spreadsheets and homegrown scripts outside the system of records – workarounds where errors can slip in.

The same fragmentation shows up in the data. Reagent lots, instruments, and reviewer decisions live apart from sample and result data, which is manageable until there’s an out-of-spec investigation or a regulatory submission. And because the underlying system doesn’t flex, the cost shows up when something changes. A new panel means a development ticket. A sequencer upgrade means re-mapping data capture. The system stays rigid when the lab needs to move. Meanwhile sample volume keeps climbing and the queue does not care.
