Scaling Molecular Diagnostics Operations Across Multiple Labs
Veracyte, a global diagnostics company that is transforming cancer care for patients globally, was processing over 100,000 samples per year but aimed to continue to grow test volume while maintaining high quality and fast turnaround.
Veracyte had grown through acquisition, resulting in multiple clinical labs using different systems to manage processes and record results. These systems were functional but highly customized, and as volumes grew, they would soon hit limits in scale and performance.
At the same time, Veracyte was redesigning one of its core assays. The new platform was built to run multiple tests on the latest sequencing technology and enable future efficiency and scale. Executing this transition required a LIMS capable of orchestrating the platform’s complex, multi-step production workflows across the lab.
Monitoring assay performance across labs was also difficult because data lived in different systems. The IT team also worried about maintaining multiple systems, especially as new assays were added and integrations with enterprise platforms like Salesforce grew more complex.
Recognizing these obstacles, Keith Gligorich, SVP Global Operations, understood that unifying multiple lab workflows on a single LIMS was essential to support future growth, new products, and emerging technologies.
The Solution: A Scalable LIMS That Unifies Workflows and Data
Keith knew the system they were to select had to perform in complex high-volume environments, integrate seamlessly to centralize data and support real-time monitoring, and efficiently adapt as processes evolved and new products were added.
After a thorough RFP process that included several vendors, Veracyte selected Labbit based on its technical approach and alignment with the team’s requirements. Key factors included its cloud-native architecture, knowledge graph database, and no-code BPMN-based workflow configuration, which support increasing user counts, workflow complexity, and laboratory throughput.
Labbit also helped Veracyte connect lab execution with downstream data processing and analytics. Labbit is directly integrated with Veracyte’s production bioinformatics pipeline services, so pipelines are automatically triggered as soon as lab work is completed, and results are recorded in Labbit without manual handoffs. This creates a closed-loop system between lab execution and computational analysis. In parallel, Labbit’s data export capabilities allow Veracyte to integrate with the broader laboratory systems and data warehouse giving the operations team real-time visibility into assay production and enables proactive, data-driven optimization across a highly complex production environment.
In addition to the platform itself, Veracyte also considered the working relationship with the Labbit team. The team’s experience in genomics and laboratory informatics, along with a collaborative approach during the evaluation process, supported productive discussions around implementation and long-term use of the system.
The Impact: Operational Visibility and Performance at Scale

A successful LIMS implementation is foundational to effective lab and business operations, and, typical of a fast-growing molecular diagnostics business, Veracyte’s deployment was complex. Veracyte was using multiple systems at different sites and decided to initially transition two high volume molecular assays to the Labbit platform. Implementing Labbit created an opportunity to formalize and refine requirements for both assays, requiring close collaboration between the Labbit team and Veracyte’s scientists and operations leaders.
Labbit’s implementation team worked with Veracyte to map workflows to laboratory operations and business processes, identify areas for improvement, and refine configurations within the system to implement a new highly integrated workflow within a year.
Improved Efficiency and Increased Throughput
Since implementing Labbit, Veracyte has improved visibility into sample progress, batch assignments, and workflow status. Labbit’s Live View, which includes interactive BPMN diagrams, provides real-time insight into laboratory operations and helps support daily coordination.
For example, in one of their production labs, Veracyte has eliminated the low-value effort of manually tracking samples and handoffs between morning, afternoon, and overnight shifts, as staff can now see exactly where every sample is resulting in time savings.
Real-Time, Proactive Production Monitoring
Traceability and production oversight have improved since implementing Labbit. With Labbit in place, production and assay data are captured within the system and integrated with instruments, automation equipment, and other software through RESTful APIs. This data is transmitted to Veracyte’s central data warehouse, bringing together information from multiple sources and providing a real-time operational view.
With centralized data and automated data flow from Labbit, the operations team can monitor laboratory performance, identify potential issues earlier, and make more informed operational decisions.
Reduced Dependence on IT and Greater Lab Autonomy
Since implementing Labbit, workflow updates during the initial implementation phase have primarily been managed by Labbit’s professional services team rather than Veracyte’s internal IT group. By adopting the platform’s no-code configuration tools, including configurable workflow tools the Veractye team plans to take on more configuration and workflow updates internally.
